some of them would've travelled north

2019-10-30 20:58:29 UTC

Yea, sure they had black slaves as well.

2019-10-30 20:58:33 UTC

and the Kush in turn conquered Egypt at one point

2019-10-30 20:58:36 UTC

considering that egypt was a connection route from north to sub saharan africa ye

2019-10-30 20:58:40 UTC

The original white supremicists.

2019-10-30 20:58:54 UTC

Egyptians

2019-10-30 20:59:12 UTC

but I don't think the entirety of the Egyptian genos if a single one existed (several wives of migration did occur, Canaanite and Hyksos both) would've been black

2019-10-30 20:59:18 UTC

both of those migrations came from Asia, not Africa

2019-10-30 20:59:43 UTC

the Egyptians probably had more in common with Mesopotamians and the Semitic peoples than they did anyone south of the Sahara

2019-10-30 21:00:04 UTC

I doubt Egyptians would have seen themselves as white, they drew themselves darker than syrians and greeks

2019-10-30 21:00:15 UTC

Genetically they were strongly related to other north african and East african/arabic populations

2019-10-30 21:00:26 UTC

No one would've seen themselves as "white" the way we define it

2019-10-30 21:00:31 UTC

that concept of race didn't exist

2019-10-30 21:00:34 UTC

yea makes sense. What Saharan powers going on then? What did they have to trade?

2019-10-30 21:00:44 UTC

the old Greek word for race, "genos"

2019-10-30 21:00:46 UTC

there was saharan trade ye

2019-10-30 21:00:50 UTC

was applied to virtually any identifiable group

2019-10-30 21:00:54 UTC

Hellenic was a race

2019-10-30 21:01:01 UTC

Persian

2019-10-30 21:01:03 UTC

Thracian

2019-10-30 21:01:05 UTC

Illyrian

2019-10-30 21:01:09 UTC

true true

2019-10-30 21:01:38 UTC

groups we'd now consider to be just ethnicities

2019-10-30 21:01:40 UTC

of course that's the Greek perspective

2019-10-30 21:01:40 UTC

I'm unaware of how Egypt categorised any peoples

2019-10-30 21:02:00 UTC

Do you understand that even today people still have problem discerning a race from an ethnicity?

2019-10-30 21:02:05 UTC

yea that's fair, maybe they were more cultural, but I bet there was facial similarities among races, coming from original "settlers"

2019-10-30 21:02:15 UTC

yes, but that wasn't my point

2019-10-30 21:02:31 UTC

the ancient concept of race was not pan-ethnic

2019-10-30 21:02:35 UTC

I mean the people talk about it anything can be labeled anything else.

2019-10-30 21:02:50 UTC

in fact the Hellenic 'race' was itself sub-divided

2019-10-30 21:03:15 UTC

Dorians, Ionians, Aeolians, Achaeans, Macedonians, Epirotes, etc

2019-10-30 21:03:44 UTC

Nobody knew what they were talking their as*es off before the industrial era and the British colonializing a third of the world.

2019-10-30 21:04:03 UTC

I can't remember which Greek said this, but he defined being Hellenic as a four-part commonality

2019-10-30 21:04:16 UTC

same blood, same language, same cult (religion), same customs / mores

2019-10-30 21:04:33 UTC

What you mean by race is just the opinion of a tiny tiny minority within the British colonial government which had the resources to enforce it on anyone else.

2019-10-30 21:04:54 UTC

this has the intriguing possibility that someone born foreign who speaks Greek, worshipped Greek gods, and obeyed Greek customs was more of a Hellene than someone born Greek who neither spoke the language, worshipped the gods, or obeyed the customs

2019-10-30 21:05:16 UTC

although the assessment does not provide the importance of each factor so assuming it to be 25:25:25:25 could be a mistake

2019-10-30 21:05:36 UTC

Alexander I of Macedon had to prove he was Greek to gain entry to the Olympic games

2019-10-30 21:05:37 UTC

Ah meeeemes!
