When I was still in school for journalism one of our boys managed to witness police shooting a guy at a mcdonald's parking lot. Dude had knives and was running for the cops and tasers failed.

So he took a photo of the dude on a stretcher and sent it in to the paper, who published the photo.

...Without checking to see if next of kin knew yet.

So the family learned about their brother/son being shot by seeing his bleeding-out face in the paper.
