Which is a good pragmatic approach to continue to survive, but is not realistic portrayal of how the world works. You could have done otherwise if free will existed (which it does not) but why would you, if all the external factors remained same (you had the same situation, knowledge, etc.)

Lots of right-wing philosophy is based on the assumption of a blank slate (ironically enough) where every second you can make any decision that goes against your personality. The idea that you can change at any moment and become more intelligent and a millionaire.
