The long and short of it, they added more character imagination and lore to the DBZ universe then DBZ did answering questions that were never answered in DBZ like why did the red ribbon army have a hateborner for Goku due to the fact that they killed Android 16 the real human Android 16 when goku back in the original dragon ball attacked the red ribbon army base.

kinda adding a whole new layer to the lore to dragon ball.
