You see, the reason he had to wake the Wind Fish was because the dream was beginning to be corrupted by nightmares and they were only getting worse and stronger. If Link hadn't woken the Wind Fish, then not only would he be trapped on Koholint forever, but the nightmares (taking the form of monsters and clouds of darkness and chaos) would have only increased in number and gotten worse. They likely all would have eventually been killed in a very noticeable and painful way. The Wind Fish would also possibly die or never wake up.

You can't do that, you can temporarily destroy the nightmares, but you can't eliminate them permanently. The Wind Fish isn't super accessible when you're in his dream as well
