fun note on crossgaurds. A lot of people think they are to protect your hand from an enemies knife, and sometimes they are, but they are more to prevent you hand from slipping. My Papa said that when he was a police, they would often catch criminals that had stabbed people by looking at the hands. This is because they would often use something like a swissarmy knife or a steak knife that didn't have a crossgaurd. When they would stab someone, the knife would strike bone and inertia dictates that their hand would keep moving with nothing to stop it.
