I am always happy to hear my elders stories. My grandparents lived through WW2 and my parents lived through communist rule in Poland so I have heard a few

at least in Romania the main weapon when everything else was outlawed we used jokes and sarcasm

by word of mouth

we did it until the point that everyone knew if you were member of the police (or secret police, securitate) you were laughed at behind doors

it is also a surviving mechanism

at some point none of the cool guys wanted to join anymore and they had a brain drain

For example in a state where everything was wiretapped we had jokes like:

1. Father writes letter to son:
Dear son please come visit me home, I need your help in the garden to dig out that old three. It's very hard work.
2. Letter from son:
Dear father please don't dig out that tree remember all the documents we buried underneath it in the middle of the night.
3. Father letter to son:
I don't know what the hell you are talking about my son. We never buried any documents, but you no longer need to come the securitate (secret police) came and dug the tree out.
