looks like the straight 8 may have a comeback
volkswagen is now developing a vr8 engine
which is essentially an inline 8 with slight v-angle (10 to 15 degrees)
this is pretty cool because straight 8s were known for their smoothness and power but had several issues such as crankwhip and crankshaft torsion at high rpm.
the slight v angle fixes this issue by shortening the engine block reducing the torsion and the risk of crankwhip no longer becomes a problem

straight 8 engines are one of my favorite configurations to work on
they have a unique sound thats almost a combination of a v8 and inline 6
