Generally speaking, the West is founded on individuality whereas the East is founded more so on collectivism. This leads to cases like present-day America, where the stubborn or foolish have decided that rebellion and suspicion of all authority is our culture, regardless of whether it makes sense or not (rampant conspiracy theorists no matter how clearly there isn’t a conspiracy for example).

for variety's sake, i'm going to go in the exact opposite direction. countries like china, south korea, and vietnam are some of the few to handle the virus competently at all, and this is reflected in their graphs of new cases per day. i agree that wet markets need more sanitary regulations, and the WHO should work towards greater impartiality, but there's reasons that the coutries i mentioned before are doing quite well while we aren't, and while i don't know what those are, they're worth investigating.
