The western part of russia, the "russian" part, that's east of the Ural Mountain range is considered European. It has been historically inhabited by the Slavs. Later on the eastern part and Siberia was colonized by cossack expeditions. The native people of Siberia are asiatic and some of them nomadic though in modern day their populations are dwindling.

Yes the Russian Orthodox Church has a lot of power in modern russia. It is however a illegitimate church seeing as it originated under the Jewish yolk in the USSR by Patriarch Sergei under threat of death and torture. The modern Russian Orthodox Church is an inheritor of that honey-pot Soviet Church. That doesn't mean that it can't do good thing or that it can't have good people involved in it but it does have corrupt and bad leadership.

When the bolsheviks came to power they initially banned Orthodoxy forcing the Church to go into exile. The Church in Exile moved to the US. The bolsheviks had bounties for demolishing churches and created an organisation for hunting and exterminating Orthodox people. Later on they created their own Orthodox honey-pot church which was completely controlled by the party. It was a sterile institution with many of the Orthodox traditions still Illegal. The Underground Orthodox Church sprung up at this time as well which was more or less a collection of individual priests working in secret to preserve the Orthodox traditions. With the collapse of the USSR the Sergian honey-pot Church gained more authority and power and siphoned up a lot of the other Churches' followers though they still exist to an extent.
