Sure 10% out of the 100% of the south owned slaves but the majority of the population hated slavery. Even general Lee himself hated slavery but could never betray his home state of virginia. They fought because the union produced extreme political unbalance. And there rights were threatened by the north they fought back. The union tried to force the south back into the union. They left because of how unfair they were.
