Two soldiers of the 9th ARVN Division near An Khe on QL 19 (Route 19) which ran from Qui Nhon to Pleiku.
They are carrying M2 carbines a couple of hand grenades and little else. The Vietnamese were used to minimal gear while the Americans often carried 50 and 60 pound packs when out in the field.

A Self Defense Corps irregular demonstrates the fire direction arrow at outpost Ly Van Manh.
Pointed in the direction of attacking forces, the arrow enabled pilots to quickly ascertain the direction of the enemy assault. In the event of a night attack, flaming cans were used to illuminate the arrow.

Though the Tropical Combat Uniform Board recommended the introduction of subdued insignia (black on olive drab) in November 1965, many US personnel were still wearing color insignia in late 1966.
