I don't know bunch about cars, although am somewhat "mechanically inclined," enough so that I can check very basic things if I can look at the car in person.

2020-11-12 18:56:27 UTC

otherwise, I don't know what to look for in a used car. :/

2020-11-12 19:00:28 UTC

Things I do know how to do are check for oil/fluid, error codes, and I can gernerally tell if a car isnt handling correctly due to steering being off or the transmission feeling rough. I can also usually tell if idle speed is good and some of the things that may be wrong if a car isnt idling properly. That's about it though

Suspension, make sure you check the suspension. Bearings, usually you can hear them. When purchasing a used car, always allot for a tune up, breaks & rotors and tires.

The interior is also a sign of neglect or good use. If someone has taken the time to take good care of the interior most likely they have maintained everything else

depending on where you are. rust. I always tap around the rear wheel wells and rocker panels to make sure it's steel and not something like bondo

thx guys

So, quick question

2020-11-12 20:15:10 UTC

👂

2020-11-12 20:15:30 UTC

I have a 2017 WRX, and I did my oil change about two or three months ago at about 54,000 miles

2020-11-12 20:16:08 UTC

And all was fine

2020-11-12 20:16:59 UTC

But, weirdly, the other night when I went out for a drive, the oil light (NOT the one in the gauge cluster, a separate light in the center of my dash) was like "time for an oil change"

2020-11-12 20:17:13 UTC

I have not even put 1000 miles on the car since the last oil change

2020-11-12 20:17:37 UTC

That would be a service light in my reckoning

2020-11-12 20:17:45 UTC

Yeah but see that's the thing

2020-11-12 20:17:56 UTC

It's not in my gauge cluster with all the other service lights

2020-11-12 20:18:39 UTC

hang on, I'll see if i can find a picture of my interior

2020-11-12 20:18:48 UTC

Not a warning light but a reminder to get a service done light

2020-11-12 20:19:10 UTC

It's on that screen in the center of my dash above the head unit

2020-11-12 20:19:28 UTC

And... that's a fair point

2020-11-12 20:20:18 UTC

Turn ignition to run(one position before starting)

2020-11-12 20:21:18 UTC

Using the control on (I think left hand side) of the steering wheel

2020-11-12 20:22:20 UTC

Pull the i/set button towards you to bring up selection screen

2020-11-12 20:23:50 UTC

Use up and down arrow to highlight the MAINTENANCE menu and pull the I/set switch towards you

2020-11-12 20:24:45 UTC

So I basically just need to reset the maintenance timer or whatever it's called?

2020-11-12 20:24:58 UTC

Select the maintenance item (oil for you) and pull the I/set towards you

2020-11-12 20:25:02 UTC

Yes

2020-11-12 20:25:08 UTC

Okay, good

2020-11-12 20:25:22 UTC

That saved me a lot of typing lol

2020-11-12 20:25:30 UTC

I figured that's what it might have been, but I was concerned that I was somehow burning oil

2020-11-12 20:25:44 UTC

So I just wanted to make sure that wasn't what was happening

2020-11-12 20:25:58 UTC

These damn boxer engines man

2020-11-12 20:26:35 UTC

No you would have cluster located warnings for a problem

2020-11-12 20:27:27 UTC

With oil the engine would either shut down or go into limp home mode

2020-11-12 20:27:42 UTC

Got it

2020-11-12 20:27:49 UTC

Thanks for the help

2020-11-12 20:27:53 UTC
