The paralytic illness of Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945) began in 1921 when the future President of the United States was 39 years old. His main symptoms were fever; symmetric, ascending paralysis; facial paralysis; bowel and bladder dysfunction; numbness and hyperesthesia; and a descending pattern of recovery. Roosevelt was left permanently paralyzed from the waist down. He was diagnosed with poliomyelitis at the time, but his symptoms are more consistent with Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) – an autoimmune neuropathy that Roosevelt's doctors failed to consider as a diagnostic possibility.

Myself and 4 other guys flew a refurbed Shorts 360 from Milwaukee to Balad Iraq. We grounded the plane 3 times for R&R on way. Stopped in Labrador, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, South England, Italy, Greece, Turkey then Iraq. Fell in love with a Scottish gal 😎 VFR whole way cept for Iraq had to climb to 17,000 on O2 to avoid surface-air possibilities. No ‘N’-#’s on grey mil-spec paint blokes at English airport were taking pics. Lib press saying “US Mil a/c warplane stopping in our backyard blah blah”. In their press. Drank like fish whole way. 👍🏽. An amazing trip...
