2019-10-14 16:28:41 UTC

2019-10-14 22:12:28 UTC

an amplifier exists to make shit louder, it doesnt have to be fancy

dont shit and piss yourself because it doesnt have an lcd screen and takes up a square foot of desk space

2019-10-14 22:13:10 UTC

Maybe I'm confused what is your idea of dongle

2019-10-14 22:14:26 UTC

its a dongle, it takes usb-c at one end and poops out analog 3.5mm at the other

2019-10-14 22:14:32 UTC

like the ones that come with phones?

Hmm

2019-10-14 22:16:34 UTC

```To me, my HD600 sounds perfectly fine plugged straight into the iPhone 7 lightning/3.5mm dongle (which sounds indistinguishable from the iPhone 6 headphone jack I had previously). To protect my ears, I have my volume set at around 60% when listening to quiet or dynamic music like classical, and like 40% when listening to the most loudly mastered pop music. When comparing that to my Oppo HA-1 amp with the volume knob around 9:30, I can barely tell the difference, except in 2 areas: the low bass is more powerful on the amp, and some of the hard transients seem to have very slightly more bite and snap. But these differences are very subtle and not noticeable unless you're critically comparing. Also, if I weren't using the HA-1 for several other purposes (preamp for my speakers, DAC for multiple sources), the $1200 price for the incredibly small improvement in the headphone sound would have been a waste of money. I also admit that most people probably listen at louder volumes than I do, and an amp will probably make a bigger improvement for them, although I still suspect that the improvements are almost all in terms of louder volume and dynamics.```
```The Apple USB-C headphone jack adapter gets the same 1 Vrms maximum output as other iOS devices. (Assuming that your country isn’t limiting the volume.) It should be well established by now how loud it can get. On pop tunes like the one in the video pictured above, a satisfying volume level for me with the HD600 is 58 (out of a maximum of 100 in Windows). The HD600 is a walk in the park for this adapter because it draws so little current even at maximum volume. When level matched, it sounds about the same as a competent dedicated headphone amp. That is, if you can get it level matched. Some kinds of music are so quiet that you might not be able to get the HD600 loud enough on the dongle.
```
cringe
2019-10-14 22:25:51 UTC
there for sure is a difference between different DACs, ive used cheap and nicer ones
2019-10-14 22:26:04 UTC
for most people it doesnt matter, but doesnt mean it never matters
2019-10-14 22:27:51 UTC
i mean the main reason DACs exist is because the sound card thats built into computers doesnt cut it for a lot of people so they need a specialized thing
2019-10-14 22:28:23 UTC
it exists so people can have something to burn money on
