Well my though was that if dan is White, and his friend is a racist, he really has no stake in his friend’s racism, so just being angry about it is only hurting him

If Dan were black, then his friend’s racism would be personal, and as such he would have reason to be so angry

The fact that a close person to him like his boyfriend is black serves the same purpose

still confused in the context but I'm not gonna try to overthink it
