For blacksmithing, if you want to practice without too much investment i have a few cheats

Instead of coal, use cheap wood charcoal, with a leaf blower attached to a ball valve

Gets you up to temp without wasting money

And use a metal barrel on the fire with wood inside & a lid to make charcoal
