Balaam was a prophet that a king hires to cast an enchantment upon Israel, his enchantment fails and so what Balaam does is he gets the Israelites to commit whoredom and eat food sacrificed to the idols, in response God sends plague to consume the Israelites, one of the proud manwhores even parades his lover in front of the face of Moses, to which Phinehas the son of Eleazar takes up a spear and runs the whores through with it putting them to death, and God loves Phinehas zeal so much that he stops the plague and permits Phinehas to enter the Promised Land. This is the Sin of Balaam also called the Matter of Peor or the Heresy of Peor
