i'm sure there's a logical explanation but everyone just says "ADSENSE YO"

2016-09-21 18:56:38 UTC

probably.

2016-09-21 18:57:00 UTC

Alphabet might literally just be a mandate of the accounting department.

2016-09-21 18:57:10 UTC

so they can keep their losers segregated and understood

2016-09-21 18:57:35 UTC

but that's wallstreetbets talk

2016-09-21 18:57:44 UTC

ohhh

2016-09-21 18:57:46 UTC

interesting

2016-09-21 18:58:35 UTC

im js itd be hard to start a youtube alternative from nothing

2016-09-21 18:58:50 UTC

if u expect it to grow

2016-09-21 18:59:06 UTC

nah you could

2016-09-21 18:59:23 UTC

bandwidth has gotten cheaper and you could put some limits in to save b/w

2016-09-21 18:59:53 UTC

for example you could mandate that people use your encoder and do h265/vp10 encoding on THEIR machines using your client and save a ton on compute alone

2016-09-21 19:00:13 UTC

spread your vids across low cost providers and make a rough and tumble cdn of sorts

2016-09-21 19:00:31 UTC

the labor is the worst part but you could make that more streamlined

2016-09-21 19:00:35 UTC

mods i mean

2016-09-21 19:01:00 UTC

now, would you actually do it? probably not

2016-09-21 19:01:26 UTC

and yes i'm mentioning encoding formats that don't work in current browsers cause if you do it today you're gonna aim for 2+ years in the future

2016-09-21 19:01:57 UTC

and the bandwidth savings alone would get you a little bit ahead, which is kinda cheating and being the more agile guy

2016-09-21 19:05:45 UTC

the reason that new sites don't pop up like mushrooms is more because when shit becomes a utility like yt is, the work vs reward becomes so small that nobody cares anymore. but look at little things like openings.moe for an example of what a targeted application of a similar use case would be, a simple illustration of an analogue to the relationship between a smaller entity solving a smaller problem that the larger utility just isn't designed to

2016-09-21 19:06:12 UTC

what reason a shitty company like VEVO can't do the same? lack of imagination

2016-09-21 19:06:25 UTC

politics

2016-09-21 19:06:42 UTC

there are a ton of chink video sites though

2016-09-21 19:13:16 UTC

what does the 'look at little things like openings' part mean ?

2016-09-21 19:13:43 UTC

http://openings.moe

2016-09-21 19:13:56 UTC

^ one guy made that, the files are tiny

2016-09-21 19:14:30 UTC

on the other hand vevo hosts their shit on youtube... for various reasons

2016-09-21 19:15:21 UTC

youtube is like geocities in its heyday

2016-09-21 19:15:32 UTC

thats dope

2016-09-21 19:15:37 UTC

the future of video sites is going to be a lot of targeted video

2016-09-21 19:16:30 UTC

that's just the way all shit works

2016-09-21 19:16:57 UTC

oh yeah for sure... im sure they already do some of that

2016-09-21 19:17:01 UTC

there's no incentive in being first to build the most awesome utility

2016-09-21 19:17:26 UTC

otoh it's pretty dumb to build your foundation on someone else's shit

2016-09-21 19:17:37 UTC

targeted like niche sites or targeted like adsense ?

2016-09-21 19:17:45 UTC

niche

2016-09-21 19:18:41 UTC

we're gonna laugh at vevo on youtube and companies on twitter in 20 years the way we can laugh at how big companies used to hold their presence on AOL or some ISP site

2016-09-21 19:20:05 UTC

otoh if governments keep getting in the way of technology that might not happen

2016-09-21 19:20:16 UTC

but that's just my libertarian showing

2016-09-21 19:20:32 UTC

This was pretty interesting to warch

2016-09-21 19:20:42 UTC

wut

2016-09-21 19:20:48 UTC

openings.moe ?
