2016-11-10 00:13:06 UTC

Cawcaw: are you just looking to make money, or are you looking for a career

2016-11-10 00:14:23 UTC

If you want to work you should join a industry meetup group and learn what software / hardware stacks are of interest that the older folks are trying to learn and learn them ahead of the curve

2016-11-10 00:14:57 UTC

If we hire people we want skills we don't already have

2016-11-10 00:15:38 UTC

If you're young and know how to keep your strong opinions moderated and useful then you become an asset and not a dangerous liability

2016-11-10 00:16:00 UTC

Which is what older folks like us wrestle with in a new hire

2016-11-10 00:18:34 UTC

I love teaching kids who have energy and are excited but I hate when I find that their passion is purely in just making money and finding shortcuts to do the task, instead of learning their craft and engineering good solutions. If I wanted something done quickly I would've outsourced it to an agency or a contractor. We would hire a young engineer because they are excited about learning and so they put more energy towards doing things to completion

2016-11-10 00:20:18 UTC

i kinda looking for just a weekend job, not an it job at some big company yet > tbh it's not that impossible to have both, a guy I know had a weekend job as IT at DTZ, he didn't have any degree he just knew his stuff, iirc you're in belgium right? 'cause I'm too

2016-11-10 00:20:49 UTC

IT like, desktop tech support?

2016-11-10 00:21:16 UTC

@shadowedROM You know, most of the time it's what they got in mind because they always got told "if you got X diploma you will earn X money" and then they will do it not because they will like it, but because they will have money.

2016-11-10 00:21:22 UTC

included but not only

2016-11-10 00:21:23 UTC

You're better off trying to get a NOC job at a datacenter

2016-11-10 00:22:24 UTC

@Rey yeah I agree that is not the correct message to give to people, since they should be gearing themselves for a whole lifetime of learning

2016-11-10 00:22:45 UTC

it's not my stuff so I don't really know the details but I knew he was also doing maintenance on their servers and shit like that

2016-11-10 00:23:28 UTC
