but if someone cut corners it could (dont quote me on this one)burn laptops usb-controller

2019-10-01 12:04:19 UTC

usualy the controllers are protected too these days with internal diodes etc

2019-10-01 12:04:26 UTC

but seen them burn anyway~

2019-10-01 12:04:37 UTC

in theory there'd probably be a tiny difference in the 5V coming from the charger and the 5V on the laptop, so you'd get a tiny current flow

2019-10-01 12:04:53 UTC

but most usb devices should be protected against that

2019-10-01 12:06:24 UTC

actually usb-c might be different

2019-10-01 12:06:44 UTC

depending on what mode and what plug on the other side

2019-10-01 12:07:59 UTC

on my machine they dont agree upon anything and nothing happens

2019-10-01 12:08:00 UTC

does usb-c send current down the pipe if it does not handshake properly even ?

2019-10-01 12:08:05 UTC

type-c -> type-c won't have vbus yeah

2019-10-01 12:08:08 UTC

i just looked at the spec again

2019-10-01 12:08:15 UTC

since the charger doesnt agree on input

2019-10-01 12:08:17 UTC

it doesn't provide vbus until after negotiation

2019-10-01 12:08:23 UTC

^

2019-10-01 12:08:33 UTC

i thought it would provide 5V vbus and then do USB-PD negotation

2019-10-01 12:08:33 UTC

though usbc negotiation is funny as fuck

2019-10-01 12:08:37 UTC

nexus 5x doesnt work properly

2019-10-01 12:08:56 UTC

on the switch charger they agree upon 3a despite the switch charger only doing 2a

2019-10-01 12:09:15 UTC

and then pulling protection and shutting off when going near 3a

2019-10-01 12:09:27 UTC

wasn't the switch (charger) fucky to begin with

2019-10-01 12:09:30 UTC

yeah

2019-10-01 12:09:31 UTC

i remember lots of people complaining about it

2019-10-01 12:09:36 UTC

nintendo cant into hardware

2019-10-01 12:09:39 UTC

still

2019-10-01 12:11:21 UTC

I don't think my laptop will support usb-c charging and I probably won't try it

2019-10-01 12:12:40 UTC

Probably not

2019-10-01 12:13:00 UTC

But you may find one of those adapters that allows you to use USBC with your current charging barrel jack

2019-10-01 12:13:10 UTC

Those exist for ThinkPads and other devices from what I've seen

2019-10-01 12:15:17 UTC

and then you can pipe the laptops usb-c to its own barrel jack for unlimited energyyyyy

2019-10-01 12:21:18 UTC

In this discord we obey the laws of thermodynamics

2019-10-01 12:25:08 UTC

!no!

2019-10-01 12:25:14 UTC

everything would be so much easier if we didnt

2019-10-01 12:42:42 UTC

why even bother with anything

2019-10-01 12:43:17 UTC

just lay back and accept the inevitable heat death of the universe

2019-10-01 15:06:01 UTC

Usbc standards are wack

2019-10-01 15:06:34 UTC

Oculus is releasing a 5 feet long usbc cable that charges and sends data using Fibre optics

2019-10-01 15:06:51 UTC

Cause there are no good USB c cables out there that long

2019-10-01 15:21:22 UTC

USBC confuses me to no end

2019-10-01 15:22:14 UTC

and USB4 using the same ports and having OPTIONAL thunderbolt support seems like it's just gonna make things lightly more confusing

2019-10-01 15:22:57 UTC

So your laptop with USB4 might support egpu might not?

2019-10-01 15:23:04 UTC

maybe it's your cord?
