yea na fuck that switch is fucked

2019-06-25 13:52:36 UTC

well, i did it, but i'm pretty bad at soldering

2019-06-25 13:58:58 UTC

well only way to get better at it = do it more often

2019-06-25 14:01:02 UTC

i never actually properly learned how, just from doing it very rarely. just heat that lead up and drop it on the pcb awkwardly

2019-06-25 14:06:20 UTC

(don't do it that way)

2019-06-25 14:06:31 UTC

heat the pad up

2019-06-25 14:06:34 UTC

and then apply solder to the pad

2019-06-25 14:11:41 UTC

i'll watch a video

2019-06-25 14:11:43 UTC

what's a pad

2019-06-25 14:12:07 UTC

anyway yea i'm doing it wrong

2019-06-25 14:16:45 UTC

a pad is the exposed copper on a pcb

2019-06-25 14:16:50 UTC

ah okay.

2019-06-25 14:17:03 UTC

that explains why the solder doesn't stick to the pad

2019-06-25 14:17:13 UTC

because i am not heating the pad

2019-06-25 14:17:16 UTC

solder won't stick if it's not hot yeah

2019-06-25 14:17:17 UTC

only the solder

2019-06-25 14:17:20 UTC

okay

2019-06-25 14:18:08 UTC

you can put a little bit of solder on the tip to make the heat transfer better

2019-06-25 14:18:12 UTC

wow that's beautiful

2019-06-25 14:18:39 UTC

your solder probably has some flux inside of it, which is the white smoke you see

2019-06-25 14:18:44 UTC

it burns off quite quickly

2019-06-25 14:18:56 UTC

if you apply it to your iron it burns off before you even get to the joint

2019-06-25 14:32:10 UTC

I've burnt many boards not doing it properly

2019-06-25 14:33:18 UTC

so you don't really want to see white smoke

2019-06-25 14:33:27 UTC

because you want to apply the flux and not burn it off

2019-06-25 14:40:55 UTC

no, the flux always burns off

2019-06-25 14:41:06 UTC

you just want it to burn off in the right place

2019-06-25 14:41:13 UTC

it cleans the joint

2019-06-25 14:41:23 UTC

ok

2019-06-25 14:44:40 UTC

oh so that's what flux is

2019-06-25 14:44:44 UTC

i should buy some of this

2019-06-25 16:34:32 UTC

white smoke is normal

2019-06-25 16:35:06 UTC

all engineers I worked with just shove the iron into the flux

2019-06-25 16:38:48 UTC

depends what kind of flux it is

2019-06-25 16:38:54 UTC

you can use the flux for cleaning your tip too

2019-06-25 16:39:05 UTC

everyone where i work uses liquid flux and applies it to the joint
