Leadership signed an extradition treaty with China which people see as ceding sovereignty to the mainland. Now they are protesting the leadership but they don't care and will likely press it through anyway.
Some people think the protests will get violent eventually
If Lam can look at all this opposition, including a good portion of current and former legislators and ministers, the senile old bat truly deserves another no confidence vote

half of the legislators are directly elected by geographical constituencies, and half of them are appointed by "functional constituencies" to represent key interest groups like labor, finance, industries etc
the chief executive is in theory appointed by democratic elections, but in order to run any candidate needs approval from Beijing
