okay so there are a couple things to understand about China's perspective, the first being that they have naturally never experienced a free and democratic society. Chinese citizens have been born and raised under the banner of the party and for the most part this has been pretty good for them, as far as they can see. The idea of an open election and direct representation is something entirely foreign to them. So they really fail to grasp the underlying aspirations of many of the protesters. Hence why so many accusations get thrown around about foreign agitators and seditious Western influence.

Beyond that, Mainlanders tend to see Hong Kong in a way similar to how Americans see Portland - a city on the wrong side of the country, full of pretentious kids too rich for their own good, constantly disparaging their home and fostering weird secessionist sentiments. In that light, many Chinese citizens dont really give a shit about their bs "cultural identity" and "legal rights" or whatever. They're just happy to see some haughty southerners get their comeuppance
