NEW YORK (AP) — Closing arguments began in the corruption trial over an ambitious upstate New York redevelopment plan known as the Buffalo Billion, with a prosecutor alleging a cover-up by defendants.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Podolsky told jurors on Monday that the defendants tried to hide crimes by deleting emails and telling lies.
A former president of the State University of New York’s Polytechnic Institute and three co-defendants have pleaded not guilty to charges they tried to rig bidding for contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
The main defendant is Alain Kaloyeros (kal-oh-YEHR’-ohs), who led the Polytechnic Institute and supported the Buffalo Billion program.
The case follows a trial that led to the conviction of a former top aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
The Democratic governor was not accused of wrongdoing.
