Normally the bipartisan divide would be kept in check by an 8 year cycle of one party getting control before changing hands to the other

Legally mandated minority majority districts across the South nearly ensure a one party system sooner or later.

People talk about the Southern Strategy as if the Republicans decided to shift to winning Southern whites. But, really, if you look at the dates of the VRA passage in 1965 to the next Census (1970) and the redrawing of districts to have black-based districts in the South to avoid violating VRA - you instantly see Dems switch from segregationists and labor to pandering to minorities. Those districts would soon become 100% Democrat-safe guaranteed House seats.
Southern whites, in turn, betrayed, voted GOP in their districts.

It has taken decades, but Northern whites are finally catching on and realizing their party of 'Labor' left them decades ago, and being surrounded by rusted out factories was a direct result of that abandonment. Northern whites have been voting increasingly GOP since 2012.
Nevertheless, I'm not looking forward to an entirely left-leaning government where the only wavering is what anti-society trash the overton window hovers over next
