Tecún Umán-Mexican border — A new caravan of migrants tried to enter Mexican territory by force Sunday, after bursting through the fence put in place by the National Guard of Guatemala.
The attempted breakthrough led to a confrontation between Federal Police and the Central Americans with a preliminary death balance of one and 20 injured.
Federal authorities reported a smaller number of families in this contingent, with few women and children, noting that most of them are young men or adults, some with a covered face and aggressive attitude.
The violence began in the Guatemalan city of Tecún Umán where just after 1:30 p.m. they breached the security ring and entered onto the Rodolfo Robles bridge which crosses over the Suchiate River.
When they reached the Suchiate 2 gate, the gateway to Mexico, those who tried to cross ran into another fence where Federal Police had placed metal barriers after the border fence.
Before 5:00 p.m., a group of young people attempted to break down the barriers. Although they were successful in breaking through the first fence, they did not breach the second barrier into Mexico.
Instead, the alleged migrants threw stones, sticks and other objects at police, who were supported by a helicopter. Police were forced to released tear gas.
Citizen reports indicated that many of the Central Americans were carrying weapons.
Members of the National Institute of Migration organized the entry of a handful of Central Americans through the front of the gate of the international bridge, while another hooded group assaulted authorities.
Due to the violent events, one Central American man was killed by the impact of rubber bullets. Both sides reported injuries.
In a public address, Interior Minister Alfonso Navarrete Prida rejected the manifestations of violence that occurred at the border and reaffirmed that migrants can only enter the country if they respect the laws.
He indicated that, in the violent acts, the Mexican policemen did not carry firearms or plastic weapons, as verified by CNDH visitors and non-governmental organizations, while some of the aggressors did, in addition to Molotov cocktails.
He added that Mexico shared information with the governments of Guatemala and Honduras so that aggressors were detained and made available to authorities.
This is the third migrant caravan to travel to the US in October. In addition, a fourth group left this Sunday from the capital of El Salvador.
