If you look in the lower left corner of your screen, you'll see your 'handle'. If you click on the little round picture, you will be able to change your status to whatever you want. Just because someone is not green doesn't mean they are not on discord, just means they prefer either not to be seen (invisible) or some other status.

Oftentimes people don't even bother with that little nicety of letting people know if they are on or not. I'm often guilty of that myself.
