The unidentified firm presented an application Saturday to Chief Justice John Roberts asking for a stay of a federal appeals court ruling earlier this week turning down the company’s effort to block a grand jury subpoena for records.
The identity of the firm and the foreign country at issue remain closely guarded secrets, but the dispute appeared to involve Mueller’s prosecutors.
When the case was argued at the D.C. Circuit last week, the courtroom was closed to the public. Court personnel went to unusual lengths to preserve the secrecy, ordering journalists to leave the floor where lawyers were presenting their positions.
The public docket in the appeal offers only bare-bones information about the dispute, containing no identification of the parties or their lawyers. However, on Tuesday, the panel considering the appeal filed a three-page order revealing that the witness fighting the subpoena is a corporation owned by a foreign state.

More than a year since his appointment, John Huber’s lack of traction on either front is leading many once hopeful supporters to dismiss his investigation as a “sham." Huber has not impaneled a federal grand jury to subpoena witnesses or hear evidence.
We are puzzled as to why he has failed to interview key witnesses – such as disgraced FBI officials and Trump advisers targeted by them, as well as Clinton Foundation whistleblowers -- who could shed light on whether FBI and Justice Department officials misused their power when they obtained spy warrants to monitor Trump adviser Carter Page; or whether such officials turned a blind eye to millions of dollars in foreign Clinton Foundation donations influencing Clinton’s official decisions as secretary of state. Even when whistleblowers have reached out to Huber, offering reams of evidence, his office has not followed up.
While some witnesses and their attorneys complain he’s not doing his job, some critics who once had high hopes for Huber now suspect he was never expected to. They say Huber’s appointment was always political, that the Justice Department had no interest in exposing its own corruption and named this longtime department official to mollify Republicans who clamored for the appointment of a second special counsel to investigate FBI and Justice activities under the Obama administration.
Once Democrats take back control of the House, they will have little interest in pressuring Huber to keep them in the loop on what are Obama-era scandals.

Operation Olive Branch saw the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) forced out of the Kurdish canton in northwestern Syria in March. If Turkey launches a new offensive east of the Euphrates, it is likely to again deploy these Syrian proxies to fight the YPG.
The YPG makes up the backbone of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) – a Kurdish-Arab force which has liberated large areas of northern Syria from ISIS control.
Turkey however considers the YPG an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an armed group fighting for greater Kurdish political and cultural rights in Turkey, which is designated a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and the EU.
Erdogan warned on Wednesday last week he would deploy troops east of the Euphrates to fight the YPG. This is despite the presence of US military personnel supporting the SDF in its operation against ISIS remnants in the Hajin pocket.
In a phone call on Friday, Erdogan and US President Trump agreed to have “more effective coordination” on Syria. Turkish and US forces are already carrying out joint military patrols near SDF-held Manbij on the west bank of the Euphrates.
