I have struggled with HRC-as-Alice until I stated comparing Alice to Dorothy. Dorothy is looking for a way out, a way home. Alice is in no hurry but seeks to impose her judgement and morals of those in a land whose rules are foreign to her. HRC seeing herself as a victim of circumstance is a hard sell. But as a bell-bottomed 70's hippy she discovers how to gain influence and compromises herself up the chain of power until she is trapped by her own bad decisions. No deals.

My Turn: In Through the Looking-Glass, the White Queen offers Alice
a job as her “ lady ’ s - maid, ”with a compensation package of
“ twopence a week, and jam every other day. ”Alice protests
that she doesn ’ t care for jam, and in any case doesn ’ t want any
jam today. The Queen clarifi es, “ You couldn ’ t have it if you did
want it. The rule is, jam to - morrow and jam yesterday — but
never jam to - day. ”Alice, of course, is puzzled by this (though
apparently not at the prospect of the job offer itself ), arguing
that “ it must come sometimes to ‘ jam to - day. ’
