Yeah I tire of social media attempting to get phone numbers. This is precious data that can be easily linked to physical addresses.
I do sometimes recommend using a virtual number like from Google, but don't link to your phone's actual number.

If you want to get a verification code, turn off voice messages and have google phone number do text verification, not voice mails
log in to google voice siteto get it.. if, IF you must for things like twitter
otherwise you need to link to real phone to get voice, etc
