The suspect was dead and two officers were injured in an officer-involved shooting late Saturday night, police said.
Police got the call about a "disturbance with violence" around 10:15 p.m. at the 4800 block of Rolando Court, about one mile from San Diego State University.
When officers responded, they smelled what they thought was smoke and fire and requested the assistance of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, San Diego police Chief David Nisleit said.
"As soon as they open the door, they were met with gunfire," he said.

The officers returned fire and two officers were injured in the shooting and were taken to the hospital for treatment, Nisleit said.
One was seriously injured but is now stable the other officer is stable but his condition and injuries are unknown, he said.
The injured officers were three- and 18-year veterans of the force, the chief said.

A firefighter, who was accompanying the officers, got out the way when the shootout started and hid inside another apartment until he was rescued by a SWAT team, Nisleit said.
It was unclear how the suspect died, whether it was from police fire or a self-inflicted injury because officers have not been able to enter the unit, the chief said.
He didn't specify how officers confirmed the suspect was dead.

When the officers were injured in the shooting, San Diego Police Department requested assistance from all law enforcement agencies in the county, including the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, National City and Carlsbad police departments.
Residents from a few blocks away said they could hear five to six shots echo through the neighborhood.
Residents of the Tuscany Place apartment complex were evacuated, though some chose to shelter in place, as officers assess the scene, Nisleit said.

MANHATTAN, New York -- Desmond Napoles, DesmondisAmazing, is a 10-year-old award-winning LGBTQ activist, drag artist, model, fashion icon, and vouger in New York City.
Desmond was born in June 2007, during NYC Pride Week, in Manhattan. As he tells it, this means that he "is a member of the Village People by default".

The adult son of Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker has been accused of assaulting a woman on a flight from Washington to Boston.
âOn June 20, the crew of flight 1354 were notified of an incident between customers shortly before landing in Boston,â JetBlue said in a statement. âThe aircraft landed at approximately 11 p.m. local time where it was met by local authorities.â
Andrew Baker, known as A.J. was not arrested or handed a summons.
The alleged victim accused him of inappropriately touching her, saying Baker grabbed her breast and refused to let go, CBS Boston said.
State police said the investigation is being conducted by the US Attorneyâs office, which refused to confirm or deny itâs leading the probe.
Bakerâs lawyer said his client is âfully cooperating.ââ
VATICAN CITY â The Vatican tribunal on Saturday convicted a former Holy See diplomat and sentenced him to five years in prison for possessing and distributing child pornography in the first such trial of its kind inside the Vatican.
Monsignor Carlo Capella admitted to viewing the images during what he called a period of âfragilityâ and interior crisis sparked by a job transfer to the Vatican embassy in Washington. He apologized to his family and the Holy See, and appealed for leniency by saying the episode was just a âbump in the roadâ of a priestly vocation he loved and wanted to continue.
Tribunal President Giuseppe Dalla Torre read out the verdict after a two-day trial and sentenced Capella to five years and a fine of 5,000 euros ($5,830.) Capella will serve the sentence in the Vatican barracks, where he has been held since his arrest earlier this year.
Prosecutor Gian Piero Milano had asked for a stiffer sentence due to what he called the âgreatâ amount of material accessed, which included 40 to 55 photos, films and Japanese animation found on his cellphone, an iCloud and Tumblr account, which Capella viewed even after he had been recalled by the Vatican in August 2017.
Prosecutors and Vatican investigators said the material featured children aged 14-17 engaging in sexual acts.
Capellaâs attorney disputed that Capella had distributed the material. He denied the amount of porn was excessive, and said his client had cooperated with investigators, repented and was seeking psychological help.
The Vatican recalled Capella, the No. 4 official in its Washington embassy, after the US State Department notified it in August of a âpossible violation of laws relating to child pornography imagesâ by one of its diplomats in Washington.
Soon after, Canadian police issued an arrest warrant for Capella, accusing him of having accessed, possessed and distributed child porn over Christmas 2016 from a church in Windsor, Ontario, using a social networking site.
The trial was the first known enforcement of a 2013 law for the Vatican City State that specifically criminalized possession and distribution of child pornography, punishing it with up to five years in prison and a 50,000 euro fine.

Now that the criminal prosecution is over, Capella will be subject to a canonical trial, which could result in him being defrocked.
It wasnât immediately clear if Canadian authorities would pursue their case against him; the Vatican doesnât extradite its citizens.
Capella said he realized that his actions were vulgar and âimproper.â During a final statement Saturday begging for the minimum sentence, Capella apologized for the pain his âfragilityâ and âweaknessâ had caused his family, his diocese and the Holy See.
I hope that this situation can be considered a bump in the roadâ and that the case could also could be useful for the church, he said.
Capella was a high-ranking priest in the Vaticanâs diplomatic corps. He served on the Italy desk in the Vaticanâs secretariat of state and was part of the official delegation that negotiated a tax treaty with Italy before being posted to the US embassy in 2016.
A canon lawyer, Capella is listed online as having written a 2003 paper for the Pontifical Lateran University on priestly celibacy and the churchâs criminal code.
The case was similar to the 2013 recall of the Vaticanâs then-ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Monsignor Jozef Wesolowski, who was accused of sexually abusing young boys on the Caribbean island.
