OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -
The authorities were forced to shoot a man after he fired several rounds of bullets at officers Friday morning.
Overland Park police responded to multiple shots fired calls about 1 a.m. in the area of West 79th and Grant streets.
When officers arrived, a suspect fired several shots at them. Multiple officers returned fire, wounding the victim. The suspect was taken to an area hospital and is in critical condition.
The suspect later died and was identified on Friday afternoon as 43-year-old Charles Webb.
The officers involved were not injured and have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard policy for departments following an officer-involved shooting.
During the incident, the suspect's girlfriend drove to the police department and told officers that her boyfriend had a gun and that she was scared. Officers were then able to determine that the calls in the area stemmed from a domestic dispute. Police say the woman was not hurt when she arrived at the station.
Greg Linden lives nearby says he did not hear the shots but was alarmed to see a large number of police vehicles in the area.
βIβm glad itβs over and Iβm glad the officers came. Unfortunately, it happens sometimes I believe,β Linden said.
The Johnson County Officer Involved Shooting Investigation is investigating the case.
