its just discords way of making sure you see when someone is mentioning your name. you can also see a list of those mentions by clicking on the @ sign

@monkeywoman In the upper right hand corner there is a seacrh box where you can enter the person's username. Next click on their name if you want to send them a direct message and let them reply back to you

@monkeywoman Also if you use the "@" symbol Discord will notify the person that you are sending the message to that they should check their messages. Hope this makes sense to you

In other words if you wish to respond to this message use that symbol and I will know that you replied otherwise I only find your reply message by accident
