This former Chairman of the Federal Election Commission (FEC) points out that Cohens, facing life in prison, saved himself with that guilty plea after becoming the target of prosecutors with political motives. His plea doesn’t in of itself prove anything. He goes on to explain that even if you were to stretch and contort this law out of its normal bounds, it would likely result in only a fine, and could have unintended consequences.

You can see examples of this in his work on the Enron case covered in this article. He attempted to charge three men with wire fraud charges for completely legal actions. In relation to these fake crimes he tacked on conspiracy, perjury, and obstruction of justice. Sound familiar? At its core it was a lie, but that didn’t stop him for attempting to destroy the lives of innocent men in his zeal for glory. Something to consider when you’re judging the validity of the charges and allegations he makes concerning Manafort, Flynn and others.

Edwards was a candidate for president in 2008. During his campaign he used campaign funds to pay a mistress who bore him a child 1 million to keep her silence. He was put on trial for felony campaign finance violations and faced a possible 30 years in prison. However the FEC concluded that “ hush money “ wasn’t a campaign finance violation, and later a jury found him innocent.

Now the Muller investigation is ignoring the FEC’s conclusion, and history, in an attempt to paint “ hush money “ as a criminal act once again. They will fail, just as the overzealous prosecutors failed to unjustly convict Edwards.
