Religious faith was actively discouraged in the former Soviet Union, certainly for a party members, and is in China (although Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, the predominant religions of pre-revolutionary China are not theistic). But the sorts of “communism” practiced on those countries, to the extent that it was practiced and to the extent that it was communism, are not the only sorts, nor do they represent the views of Marx, who also doesn't determine what communists believe.
