if a gravitational wave passes along one arm of LIGO and across the other then first arm will be compressed and the laser will light arrive at the detector at a different time than the beam returning from the second arm and so there will be a interference pattern.
You should think more about what they are telling you. If gravity was so easy to prove, why would the spend billions of dollars to try and prove gravity by looking lightyears away from earth? Maybe its just a just a big sagnac experiment for all we know.
