I would like to point out that the strike isn't a violation of Trump's campaign promises. Remember, Trump ran on a policy of peace through strength and that the U.S. was seen as a paper tiger. Trump never commited to full non-interventionism (does saying "I will wipe ISIS from the face of the Earth" imply this?) , which would be an position incompatible with the peace through strength doctrine. Whether you like or not Trump was forced into this position from the last administrations, specifically the 2013 agreement that Assad agreed to in regard to chemical weapons. The position of the U.S. in global affairs that developed over the last decades can't be undone in months. However, what Trump did fully commit to is not commiting violent regime change, which has not been conducted, with SOS Tillerson saying any attempts to remove Assad would be diplomatic in nature . Compare the actions (so far) of Trump to those of Bush and Obama. Bush invaded Iraq with the purpose of redeveloping the entire nation. Obama openly supported Libyan rebel's with air support and left the country a ruin. Trump made a single reasonable and propotional military action, while taking every action required to cause as few military and civilian casualities as possible. He then clarifies through Tillerson that it was a one off. I'm sorry, but that is as non-interventionist as the U.S. could ever be in the near future.
