Cloudflare's ddos protection is just trash. this is the third site of theirs I've seen get ddos in the past 2 weeks

Cloudflare is biased anyway, I don't see that arrangement working out too well in the long term. I hope the origin server provider is someone reliable.

name servers don't make a huge difference, it just tells you how to resolve a URL

Cloudflare requires you to use their nameservers to enable their services, it's step 1 of the setup process
