The "EARN IT" bill is making its way through Congress. If passed, it will effectively end encryption of online communication by requiring all messages to pass through government-approved scanning software.

This is being done under the pretense of preventing child exploitation, but it makes websites responsible for what users write, and they could be sued into nonexistence.

The potential for abuse by authoritarian governments is obvious.
