it was called that because in the rest of europe, so close during/after WW1, the media propagandised the virus to be weaker and less devestating than it was to boost the morale of everybody. however, the spanish press reported the facts as they were. as they looked so bad by comparison, it became known as the spanish flu because seemingly spain was hit the hardest
thus, calling it a spanish flu is just a misnomer really, its not relevant to any facts. it didnt come from spain nor particularly affect spain harsher than anywhere else
however, calling it the chinese virus i agree with, because it did originate in wuhan and was really incompetently contained.
