The nukes these days are somewhat over kill
like if russia started losing in a landwar, they would have strong justification in their minds just to launch nukes. They might not but it is maybe even more likely than not that they would.
Nukes today 1000%(may be an exaggerated percent because didn't research nukes) more destructive than the ones dropped in Japan

The only way to have a war without nukes is to have a revolution in that certain country
if all the nukes go off though, we'd still probably be fucked though, just not instantly
the radiation would get in the air and irradiate particles everywhere

it depends on the halflife of each individual nuclear detonation
some can last like millions of years potentially
Like in Hiroshima, people are still getting a couple percentages of radiation higher than normal
but like the particles they irradiate in the initial blast can lose most of their radioactivity
the blast sites will still be leaking radiation though
