the reason is that it makes molten salt reactors attractive from a cost perspective, in the near term

everyone loves fusion

but fission is pretty useful already

so we should use it

if you want a minor short-term gain in power, put billions into thorium. if you want paradigm shifting power, put billions into nuclear fusion

so we can actually power the supercomputers for ITER
