katana vs. katana, it's not a battlefield weapon

2018-09-22 10:16:25 UTC

It's testing whether a katana would be effective against a man wearing armor made of longswords

2018-09-22 10:16:32 UTC

lol

2018-09-22 10:16:47 UTC

Katanas were absolutely battlefield weapons.

2018-09-22 10:17:17 UTC

barely, and mostly during WW2, before that polearms ruled the battlefield

2018-09-22 10:17:22 UTC

it's probably just to show people who only hear about katanas in pulp culture

2018-09-22 10:17:28 UTC

as well as bows of course

2018-09-22 10:17:34 UTC

Also are we discussing actualy *katana* katanas or just any katana pattern sword

2018-09-22 10:17:35 UTC

and think they can actually cut though steel

2018-09-22 10:17:37 UTC

they should try it against a bulletproof vest

2018-09-22 10:17:49 UTC

i mean kevlar

2018-09-22 10:18:02 UTC

Well yeah, Japan's main battlefield weapon was a yari, but what does that have to do with the effectiveness of katanas?

2018-09-22 10:18:27 UTC

They carried them around because they were useful. Same as why arming swords were used in the crusades

2018-09-22 10:18:29 UTC

they should try it against a ww2 tank

2018-09-22 10:18:32 UTC

katanas aren't designed for battlefield use, they're for katana vs. katana duels

2018-09-22 10:18:38 UTC

No

2018-09-22 10:18:50 UTC

I think the design of the katana is a result of the poor resources that japan had. say, if they had better metal, I'm sure they would have much more functional swords (as well as actual metal armor)

2018-09-22 10:18:53 UTC

They were used for situations where you'd want a sword.

2018-09-22 10:18:56 UTC

@Schedrevka what do you expect? It aired on RTL2, the german channel best known for its horrible reality tv series.

2018-09-22 10:19:20 UTC

had they been designed for battle instead of say aesthetics they would have straight hilts

2018-09-22 10:19:22 UTC

Yeah, like I said before I just wouldn't take any TV show on this sort of thing seriously

2018-09-22 10:19:30 UTC

What

2018-09-22 10:19:39 UTC

guys lets drink ourselves to death and become one in LCL <:shocku:444208665864699914>

2018-09-22 10:19:42 UTC

not sure when i would need a sword

2018-09-22 10:19:49 UTC

You really think someone is going to put their life on the line over aesthetics?

2018-09-22 10:19:50 UTC

Fllly me to the moooon

2018-09-22 10:20:05 UTC

People depended on those weapons for generations

2018-09-22 10:20:14 UTC

uwu swords

2018-09-22 10:20:17 UTC

*katanas were only ever used to kill unarmored peasants, change my mind*

2018-09-22 10:20:37 UTC

so you're saying they were useful?

2018-09-22 10:20:38 UTC

There's something to be said for Japan's lack of expirimentation and strict traditionalism, but they're fine weapons

2018-09-22 10:20:46 UTC

yes

2018-09-22 10:20:52 UTC

fine given the resources they had

2018-09-22 10:21:01 UTC

No, just fine in general.

2018-09-22 10:21:12 UTC

you think this was the most efficient armor design out there, and that sacrifices weren't made for the sake of aesthetics?

2018-09-22 10:21:15 UTC

japan is fine with weaponry until they try to make a nambu hehe

2018-09-22 10:21:51 UTC

I never said it was the best armor out there.

2018-09-22 10:22:07 UTC

>You really think someone is going to put their life on the line over aesthetics?

2018-09-22 10:22:08 UTC

yes

2018-09-22 10:22:10 UTC

I do believe that

2018-09-22 10:22:17 UTC

because when I look at the armor they wore
