I think for most of them it's about fear. If you think da Gubmint did 9/11 and keep aliums in area51 you have something to point at and say "see, those are in control. I don't like them but they've got everything sorted". Accepting that the world is just one big clusterfuck with 6 billion people all pulling in different directions with no one at the steering wheel is a scary thought many find hard to accept
