We play along because for centuries prior countries on the central European plain repeatedly got butchered, reassembled, disappeared, mutilated, torched and whatnot
I think Poland maintained this slightly better because it feels more immediately threatened by Russia, Eastern Germany maybe because it got out of socialism and now has to put up with this shit
