Most Hispanic Americans are Mexicans or Central Americans, who are primarily of mixed Amerindian ancestry

The next largest group are people from the Caribbean (puerto ricans, Cubans, and Dominicans), who can be anything from full Spaniard to full black

Only South America has a significant proportion of whites

And even then it’s not every country

I think the census would benefit from including Spanish terms for mixed race

Like mestizo or mulatto

Because when people see options like “mixed” or “two or more races,” they usually think it’s black + white or Hispanic + Asian or something like that

I’d say about half the people catalogued in the US as “white hispanic” would not count as white back in Venezuela

Yes there was a small German settlement, but it was just one town

Most of today’s white Venezuelans come from Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese immigrants from after the war

I’d say it’s about 70% white if you only include pure-blooded Europeans

Which funnily enough is still higher than the US these days

plenty of germans,italians and slavs moved into argentina during the 19th-20th century

The only actual white country left in this hemisphere is Uruguay

instead of white hispanics just refer them to castizos

Yeah that’s what makes it tricky though

There are a good number of actual whites, and they should be distinguished from castizos

Though the line is blurred in the US since Hispanics mix more readily here than back home

And there’s also a good number of them with like 20% African ancestry but no significant Amerindian component

Especially Cubans and Puerto Ricans

Though at some point they’re all so mixed it stops mattering

Because eventually the population coalesces into a single mixed gene pool where roughly everyone has the same ratios of each ancestry

Like Americans in the Midwest being roughly 40% British 40% German 20% euro mystery meat
