Instead of developing complexity by building themselves outwards these people build themselves inwards. Instead of expanding their identity outwards by building relations to the external world (eg. becoming a lawyer, a member of the local church, a fitness buff, a violinist...) they seek to create complexity by categorizing what they have already, which for an undeveloped human is just a desire for sex and dopamine drips. So they create categorizations of their sexual preferences and media consumption.
