well to be more exact, catholisism was basicly sold to rome on the pretense of being more sacred without being as difficult to adhere to as jewdism, this was to try and accomplish a few things, several of those things failed such as maintaining solidarity consitering rome was actually a empire built on the idea of an expanding polytheism that if you throw away removes any connection between those rome conquared and the roman capital

it could have helped with roman decadency but really it just failed to keep the empire alive and thus it fell appart, the real problem is that the central roman population lost any respect for their own religion, it would have just been more beneficial to rekindle that but thats kinda imposible consitering that once you lose faith its very difficult to regain it.

rome falling appart basicly ended the decadency for catholisism and thus catholosism takes that credit for the right reason or not
