That's one of the big thing pure free-marketers ignore. Companies will push regulations or economic redistribution if they think it will give them an advantage over their rivals or ultimately help the bottom line.

And rent seeking is very good at helping the bottom line.

In the case of SV in particular. I think if you trust-busted, European regulations would squash any large alternatives anyway.

They'd all be subject to the same regulations and turn out the same under those regulations.

And I don't like the regulations Europe seems to want to push.

Plus, network effects are very much a factor in social media.
