I think it makes sense if you look at it from the standpoint of power and rent-seeking.

2018-08-28 23:58:22 UTC

oh def

2018-08-28 23:58:27 UTC

That's one of the big thing pure free-marketers ignore. Companies will push regulations or economic redistribution if they think it will give them an advantage over their rivals or ultimately help the bottom line.

2018-08-28 23:58:38 UTC

And rent seeking is very good at helping the bottom line.

2018-08-28 23:58:43 UTC

yep

2018-08-28 23:58:58 UTC

Plus, you give Reddit essentially unconstrained power via unconstrained mindshare.

2018-08-28 23:59:11 UTC

You basically get an oligarchy from the top offices at Reddit.

2018-08-28 23:59:29 UTC

It wouldn't be in principle that different from the cities that are electorally run by their unions.

2018-08-28 23:59:34 UTC

And probably have the same problems.

2018-08-29 00:00:50 UTC

its like your arguing for separation of powers within an organization lol

2018-08-29 00:01:06 UTC

No, I'd argue separation of powers in society.

2018-08-29 00:01:14 UTC

oh

2018-08-29 00:01:16 UTC

Social media is too powerful, IMO.

2018-08-29 00:01:23 UTC

oh definitly

2018-08-29 00:01:33 UTC

tbh trust busting is a route

2018-08-29 00:01:39 UTC

I'm not so sure.

2018-08-29 00:01:47 UTC

Silicon Valley can be extremely insular.

2018-08-29 00:02:02 UTC

And it has a certain collective consciousness.

2018-08-29 00:02:13 UTC

Thats their problem

2018-08-29 00:02:18 UTC

they have no rivals

2018-08-29 00:02:26 UTC

Simply calling Google, Google A, Google B, Google C isn't that effective if they're all essentially the same.

2018-08-29 00:02:31 UTC

they are all located in the place even

2018-08-29 00:02:38 UTC

You need actual alternatives.

2018-08-29 00:02:41 UTC

yea

2018-08-29 00:02:50 UTC

It's like ABC/CBS/NBC. Is there really a difference?

2018-08-29 00:03:02 UTC

not much

2018-08-29 00:03:20 UTC

content varies i guess lol

2018-08-29 00:03:20 UTC

If I thought trust busting would actually lead to viable alternatives, I'd support it.

2018-08-29 00:03:25 UTC

Not much.

2018-08-29 00:03:29 UTC

It's not like Fox versus CNN.

2018-08-29 00:03:41 UTC

oh yea agreed there

2018-08-29 00:04:09 UTC

In the case of SV in particular. I think if you trust-busted, European regulations would squash any large alternatives anyway.

2018-08-29 00:04:26 UTC

They'd all be subject to the same regulations and turn out the same under those regulations.

2018-08-29 00:04:41 UTC

And I don't like the regulations Europe seems to want to push.

2018-08-29 00:05:02 UTC

Plus, network effects are very much a factor in social media.

2018-08-29 00:05:48 UTC

It's a monopolistic industry by nature.

2018-08-29 00:05:50 UTC

EU fucks things up yea

2018-08-29 00:06:06 UTC

I don't think people realize how important the EU is in this whole mess.

2018-08-29 00:06:13 UTC

nope

2018-08-29 00:06:27 UTC

Since most places are not going to make two separate English services.

2018-08-29 00:06:29 UTC

remember "we have changed our terms and conditions" emails
